To strengthen national competencies and the capabilities of the National Armed Forces the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Latvia has signed three research and development (R&D) contracts to develop counter-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) solutions.
The R&D contracts for the development of counter-drone solutions have been signed with the companies "Origin Robotics", "SAF Tehnika", and "Frankenburg Technologies".
The first three counter-drone research and development projects include the development of an automated drone interceptor, electronic warfare-based solution, and the development of guided missiles. The contracts are structured as separate projects, which allow for their flexible adjustment or expansion, adapting to the trends observed in the development of UAVs or their countermeasures.
The implementation of the projects follows the co-financing principle – the development will be jointly financed by both the Ministry of Defence and the involved companies. The average investment proportion in such projects is planned to be in the range of a 65/35 split, with approximately 65% invested by the defence sector and 35% by each industry partner.
It is expected that the total anticipated investments from the Ministry of Defence and industry partners could reach up to ten million euros.
